SKINCARE 101: getting the basics right

About Us page component.

When it comes to skincare, it’s the basics that matter. Skincare is personal. Just because it’s right for someone else, doesn’t mean it will work for you. That’s why at MyShowcase we’re all about personalised, expertly curated beauty; helping you to find your perfect routine. The key to a great skincare regime is understanding your skin type. Flakiness, shine or sensitivity? Let’s diagnose you...

NORMAL SKIN

  • Well balanced, with small pores and infrequent breakouts
  • Occasional dryness, particularly in winter
  • Skin feels comfortable, not desperate for moisturiser (even after cleansing)

COMBINATION SKIN

  • The most common skin type
  • Pores are often larger around your t-zone
  • Cheeks are prone to mild dryness but your t-zone may be oilier
  • Hormones can have a big impact on combination skin, especially during menopause
  • Skin feels comfortable, but cheeks can feel tight and in need of moisturiser post cleansing

DRY SKIN

  • Skin feels tight and in need of moisturising post cleansing
  • Smaller pores, less prone to acne or breakouts
  • Fine lines appear earlier
  • Makeup can become patchy throughout the day
  • Prone to dullness and flakiness

OILY SKIN

  • Skin often appears shiny
  • Larger, more visible pores
  • Prone to spots, blackheads or acne and is highly affected by hormones
  • Very comfortable post cleansing
  • Slower to age

One of those match your skin? Great, step one...tick! Now it’s also important to consider if you have any regular skin sensitivities or if you’re prone to dehydration. Here are the tell-tale signs of these:

SENSITIVE SKIN

  • Flares up easily and is prone to hot and itchy red blotches - sometimes even a burning feeling after the shower
  • It’s important to avoid mineral, palm or paraffin oils, possibly also fragrance in your skincare
  • It’s also super-important to try and establish which ingredients cause sensitivity

DEHYDRATED SKIN

  • Skin lacks water as opposed to dry skin (which lacks oil)
  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are key ingredients to look out for
  • Choosing a targeted serum or facial oil is essential for your routine
